More General Information about the Accommodation

Four Properties Open All Year
Stairs or no stairs  .. neighbours or solitude.. a garden to relax in or a willingness to share with our livestock the 1700 acres of hill unfolding from your front door..a  two-storey "flat" or a farm cottage with disabled facilities..these and other options make each of our 4 properties uniquely different.  We would be surprised if at least one of our holiday homes doesn't match your needs.  Crosswoodhill offers quality accommodation at its best:  the country cottage of your dreams. well-equipped, flexible family accommodation.. business accommodation that feels like home. Traditional comfort or contemporary open-plan chic. All in a lovely rural location, just a short drive from Edinburgh and Livingston in central Scotland. If you're searching for 'Edinburgh self catering' or 'Edinburgh holiday cottage' ...Crosswoodhill's your answer.

What to expect of our self-catering cottages
Fitted and furnished to an exemplary standard, each property is superbly and thoughtfully equipped, with all those welcome extra touches - fresh flowers, games, toys, teddies and plentiful up-to-date tourist information.  You'll find special folders full of information on local attractions and activities and for an at-home day, there are books for all tastes. Escape into the magical world of Harry Potter, imaginatively conceived at a cafe table just 18 miles from us! Or immerse yourself in a classic, a thriller or romance.

Beds are made up ready for guests (some have electric blankets). In the kitchen we provide an electric cooker, microwave, fridge, freezer, dishwasher  as well as quality crockery, cutlery, pots and pans, food processor, kettle, coffee maker and toaster. And cooking gadgets galore. Need a hairdryer,  ironing board, iron, shoe cleaning equipment?  It's all there.  Other facilities include washing machine, tumble dryer, colour TV, DVD player, video-recorder and payphone. (As well as being able to ring out, friends and family can reach you direct "at home" if you choose to give out the number.)  And to complete the relaxing ambience, all 4 properties now have a hi-fi system.  So bring a little bit of  "home"  away with you in the form of CDs, tapes or DVDs.

Relax cosily in front of a multi-fuel stove which burns peat, coal and logs.  A flick of a switch will also bring you oil-fired central heating and hot water delivered at times that suit your lifestyle. With a back-up electric immersion heater ( rarely used ), bath and power shower, all the conveniences of modern living are to hand.  Child's cot, more portable travel cot, baby intercom, high chair and other gadgets all available on request.  Very child-friendly.  Both cottages are wheelchair friendly too, particularly Steading Cottage.

Car parking for at least 2 cars beside each property.  Picnic tables and garden chairs. BBQ available.  Private water supply direct from a natural spring on the Pentland Hills.

Why not take a look at our Cottages Page with brief descriptions of Midcrosswood, Steading Cottage, the Wing and Orlege End? From there you can then go on to view individual pages for each of these 4 very special properties, each with interior photos, layout plans and more detailed description.

Pets:
We welcome well-behaved dogs in three of the properties, cats and even the occasional tortoise in hibernation.  We do ask you to keep your pet off the soft furnishings (sofas, chairs, etc.) and out of the bedrooms. We also ask that you do not exercise your dogs in the fields where sheep graze.  Just a mile down the road a "forestry" picnic area allows plenty of scope for letting your dog off the lead.

Public Transport and Getting Around:

near to airport
Airports: Edinburgh / Glasgow 16 / 38 miles
take the train to the city
Rail: West Calder ( Edinburgh /West Calder /Glasgow line ) 6 miles
just a short ride by bus
Bus: West Calder 6 miles
Ferry: Zeebrugge - Rosyth (22 miles)
As you can see a car is essential! a car is essential

However if you are nervous about driving into the cities of Edinburgh and Glasgow, let the train take the strain! Park your car, free of charge, either at West Calder Railway Station ( 6 miles ) or Curriehill (a 10 mile drive but a cheaper return rail fare) and hop onto the hourly train into Edinburgh Waverley. (Click above for timetable)  Within 30 or 20 minutes (depending on which station you use) you will be in the very heart of the city and spared any parking hassles or expense.

Alternatively drive into Edinburgh, street park your car free of charge before entering the restricted parking zone, hop on a bus, buy a day ticket after 09.30 hrs. to the centre, elsewhere, and return, all for £2.50 adult, £1.00 child. Or use the Park and Ride facility on the A71 you will see signposted as you drive in along the A70. Cost? £1.00 per person each way into the city centre.

Split destinations any day? Although  a car is essential if staying at Crosswoodhill,  there may be days when someone finds themselves left "at home" with no transport.  No problem! Our local council offers a subsidised taxi service to or from West Calder train station. Cost:  £2.50 per adult, £1.25 per child for each one-way journey . This Carlink service must be booked 45 minutes in advance.

Food provisions:
The local supermarket in West Calder ( 6 miles) closes at 20.00 hrs. on  weekdays and Saturdays, 17.00 hrs. on Sundays. However 10 miles from here, ASDA (WAL-MART), a food superstore in Livingston Almondvale Centre  is open 06.00hrs till midnight every day.  Close by is a 24 hour garage.

Your hosts:
Hew and Geraldine (known as "G" ) Hamilton  farm Crosswoodhill. They live in a separate wing of the farmhouse and are almost always on hand to help, inform and try to make all their guests' Scottish  holiday a special one.

In October 2001, Crosswoodhill scooped the prestigious Scottish Tourism Thistle Award: SELF-CATERING OPERATOR OF THE YEAR. Sponsored by VisitScotland (the new name for the Scottish Tourist Board), excellent Customer Care, exceeding expectations, is key to this award.  We have kept up the pampering and in November 2002 Crosswoodhill won the Customer Service Award in the annual West Lothian Business Excellence Awards which are open to every kind of business trading in our Region.

And, in the Spring of 2005, after a 4 year gap, Crosswoodhill decided to try again for the Tourism Oscar of Self-Catering Operator of the Year and is thrilled to have won the title once more. This is the first time the award has been won for a second time by the same self-catering operator.

Pride & Passion - Click Here to find out more....
We go out of our way to make people smile!  We are "friends" of Pride & Passion, a movement sweeping Scotland which aims to take the visitor's experience from great to greater and make Scotland a must-go destination.

Caring for our environment

In each property you will find a "Green File" where we try to highlight the eco-friendly things we are doing and ask for your help. For a general overview, please click on our "Environmental Statement / Policy"

No smoking policy

We want to provide a healthy, safe and comfortable environment for all of our guests, including those that follow you. We therefore provide ashtrays outside and strongly urge you not to smoke inside the accommodation. Smoking upstairs and in the bedrooms is totally unacceptable.  However we suspect that there are a minority of guests unwilling to smoke outside in adverse weather conditions, even were smoking to be banned downstairs.  Rather than promise a totally unpolluted cottage and occasionally disappoint, we therefore prefer to request "considerate smoking" and we find our guests are almost always pleasantly surprised when they almost always inherit a clean air cottage.  We greatly appreciate guests' co-operation in keeping it that way.

Weekly Rental Charges and Terms of Let:
Detailed in the appropriate pages, please view rates and terms of let.
Included in the rental are all linen and towels.

Extras:
Coal, home-produced peat and logs (when available). Electricity by meter reading at start and end of stay (no coins).  Oil for the Central Heating as used.

We find a huge variation in guests' usage of fuel and electricity. For this reason we feel it is fairer to charge fuel and electricity 'at cost', as an extra, at the end of the stay, based on actual recorded measurements of consumption. That way the more economical guests are not subsidising the more extravagant users as so often happens when an 'all-in rental' figure is quoted. All-in rentals tend to build in a fuel allowance based on average to high usage. Our system means you only pay for what you use.

Telecommunications:
If you need enhanced access to the phone-line in your property, perhaps to connect to your own pc. with its web or e-mail services, please let us know. When we can, we try to make suitable arrangements and save you a trek elsewhere for these facilities. We can unlock the payphone and provide you with a telephone socket and ordinary phone. You then pay us for your calls at BT cost-price ( non-profit-making rates ) + £2.53 per week / part week for the line rental. Although our cottages don't yet have wi-fi, you are welcome to park your car in our front drive, get out your lap-top and make free use of our wi-fi, day or night.

Weekly bookings generally run from a Saturday afternoon to a Saturday morning. Part-week bookings at a lesser rate may be available last minute.

Enquiries and booking:
Our website includes an Availability Query Form for your use. Alternatively, mail, email, phone or fax us. We are happy to answer any questions you may have and respond very quickly. Subsequently, if you wish to book, you may either use our online secure server booking form or post us your completed application form and payment.

For your convenience we can now accept credit card payments in addition to the more conventional methods.
we now take credit card bookings online for your convenience
Short notice holiday rentals / lets of less than a week are sometimes available
(but rarely during school holiday periods).
